How To Calculate Your Food Waste Impact:

  • Step-by-step Calculate Your Food Waste

    1. Under the "Proteins" section, click on the number of proteins (max 3).
    2. Under Protein 1, click on the drop-down box for "protein label" and select the first protein. If you select "other," you then have an option to fill in a custom protein label/name.
    3. Enter the average number of daily servings for this protein.
    4. Use  the “-“ or “+” on average weight per servings to adjust serving size
    5. Add in a cost per oz under "average cost of protein."
    6. Add in the percentage of Est. % Waste Per Serving for this protein. This refers to product that is either cooked or purchased but never leaves the kitchen. The national average is 8-15% over make.
    7. Repeat steps 4-6 for Proteins 2 & 3.
    8. Continue to scroll down to "Fruits and Vegetables."
    9. Fill out up to 3 products under "Fruits and Vegetables" in the same way as for proteins.
    10. Fill in the "Disposable Storage" section (Optional) . This refers to items like plastic containers, shrink wrap, foil, zip lock bags. Each disposable storage input requires a name and average total investment per week. Utilizing the GreenVAC containers will result in reduction of disposable storage and single use plastics
    11. Fill in the "Labor" section. This section has the option to fill up to 3 inputs. The labor section refers to labor associated with food prep time.
    12. Under "Labor 1," enter a custom role, for example, day prep, evening prep, or weekend prep.
    13. Next, enter the ‘average labor rate’ using the “-” or “+” .
    14. Click on the "-" or "+" on ‘average duration’ section to adjust prep hours per shift.
    15. Click "-" or "+" to adjust days per week.
    16. Repeat steps 12-15 for Labor 2 and 3 as required.
    17. Last section, ‘multi-distribution & deliveries’ using the “-” or “+” to adjust the 4 tabs - ‘# of locations’, ‘avg distance to site’, ‘route frequency’ and ‘vehicle operation cost’ 
    18. Scroll down to "View My Results."
    19. Add in your email and click "View My Results." The results are revealed, and the report is automatically emailed to you. At this point you can adjust the calculator and revise the results in real time.
